Types of aquarium fish
Today, about a million different types of aquarium fish are known, and every day more and more new breeds appear by crossing existing species. In this article, we will give you a list containing the most common types of aquarium fish, grouped by species family.
So, let's start with the cichlids. This is a family of percussion order, the body sizes of its representatives range from two and a half centimeters to one meter in length. Most of the fish of this family are threatened with extinction, therefore, their fishing in wild waters is strictly prohibited! Of the aquarium ornamental species, the ophthalmic astronotus, discus, meek cichloma, scalar, ocular cichloma and others belong to the cichlid family.
Family of cyprinids. Representatives of this family live almost all over the globe except South America and Australia, prefer northern latitudes. The family is represented mainly by freshwater fish; in salt water they can be found only in the Black and Caspian Seas. The cyprinid family includes such species of aquarium fish as zebrafish, cherry barb, Sumatran barb, fire barb, Schubert barb and so on.
Catfish family belong to radiant fish, and it has about 100 species. Representatives of this family are distinguished by the fact that individual individuals can reach 2-3 meters in length. Fish of the catfish family are found in almost all waters of Eurasia, with the exception of the Arctic Ocean. Among the decorative aquarium catfish, they include: golden catfish, leopard catfish, aluminum catfish, callichtus and others. Experienced aquarists recommend in addition to other fish to keep catfish in aquariums, as they contribute to the natural cleaning of soil and glass.
The haracin family - These are representatives of freshwater fish that live off the coast of South America, mainly in tropical and subequatorial latitudes. Representatives of the family are close in structure to cyprinids, but differ in much more modest sizes and have a bright color, which made them the favorites of aquarists. Types of aquarium fish of the haracin family include neon red, sickle, menorah, diamond tetra, lemon tetra and others.
Maze family differs from the rest in that its representatives have a unique labyrinth organ, which allows the fish to also breathe atmospheric oxygen. Mostly the labyrinth family of fish lives in African waters, except for the island of Madagascar. Among the inhabitants of the aquariums, this family includes pearl gourami, kissing gourami, fighting cockerel, macro pods and others.
Pecilian family members represented by three hundred species of live-bearing fish that live mainly in salt water in the area of California, Uruguay and Ecuador. Some species are often found near the Panama Canal. Peculiar fishes are distinguished by a particularly bright color in males, which are much smaller than females. The most famous among aquarists are swordsmen, guppies and mollies.
